Photos of me!!

the bay of pigs  invasion

(have to put this on here school requirement)

How I chose this project is when I was going through the options I saw the word pigs and immediately wanted to do it. But the Bay of Pigs invasion does not include pigs. It's only called the Bay of Pigs invasion because it happened on the Bay of Pigs beach. During my research I found a lot of really good websites like  JFK library, and Bay of Pigs Chronology. My historical argument was if Fidel Castro is a good leader or not, and if JFK made the wrong decision about calling the invasion that had failed, in my opinion he made a right choice but he did it wrongly, there would have been better ways to take out castro and the poor invasion wasn't thought out really but part of it failing was because the plan got leaked to press if it had remained silent it would have worked way better. My project is significant to history because Fidel Castro had taken control of Cuba’s government January 1st 1959, And was a horrible dictator trying to lead his country to ruin, fear and rejection. He was a soviet client posing a threat to all of Latin America, And the bay of pigs failing was an embarrassment to our government and led us to want to do better.  I conducted my research by going through as much websites as i could find about my project so i could get all the fact correct and not miss anything, the struggles i had during it was trying to figure out what information to keep and to leave out, there was lots of information on my topic and it made it really hard trying to decide what was significant to know. How i created it was i made a 3D model of the attack on the beach, and i also made a poster.  My project went really well but me and my partner didn't get along so i'm definitely working alone next time. And my presentation i only presented twice, my partner did most of the prestanting because i was showing my cousin the school.

Beginning:

Fidel Castro overthrew Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista in NUM0 & gave a victory speech from Santiago  "when the North Americans came and made themselves masters of our country."

During the Eisenhower administration, the CIA informed John F. Kennedy of a plan to train Cuban exiles for an invasion. President John Foster Dulles states, “The Provisional Government appears free from Communist taint and there are indications that it intends to pursue friendly relations with the United States.” The next day, Castro's victory reaches Havana.

Training:

The CIA set up training camps in Guatemala in March. By November, they had trained 1,400 people for an assault landing and Guerrilla warfare. The Cuban Revolutionary Council, led by Jose Miro Cardona, led the anti-Castro Cuban exiles in the United States,  & was poised to take over the provisional presidency of Cuba if succeeded. Castro figured out the guerilla training camps in early October 1960. February 1961, President Kennedy authorized the plan. The landing point at the Bay of Pigs, the site was a remote swampy area on the southern coast of Cuba.

The Plan:

A 1,400-man invasion force would launch a surprise attack. A smaller force landed on the east coast of Cuba for confusion. The CIA had World War II B-26 bombers & painted them to look like Cuban Air Force planes. The bombers missed most targets, & left most air forces intact. News broke of the attack, photos of the planes became public. On April 17 Brigade 2506, landed at the beaches & came under heavy fire. Cuban planes strafed the invaders, sank two escort ships, and destroyed half of air support. Bad weather hampered ground force, ledding to work with soggy equipment.

The Counterattack

Over the next 24 hours, Castro ordered roughly 20,000 troops toward the beach, and the Cuban air force continued. President Kennedy authorized an air umbrella at dawn on April 19. Six unmarked American fighter planes took off to help the brigadeÅ› B-26 aircraft flying, but the planes arrived an hour late. The Cubans shot them down, and the invasion was crushed later on. Some exiles escaped, while the rest were killed or imprisoned by Castro's forces. Almost 1,200 members surrendered, and more than 100 were killed.

The Aftermath

The surviving Prisoners were tried, sentenced to 30 years in prison, & held captive for 20 months as the U.S. Negotiated a deal with Castro. Castro settled on $53 million worth of baby food and medicine. On December 23, 1962, a group of freed prisoners landed in the U.S. Surviving brigade members had a ceremony in Miami´s Orange Bowl. President Kennedy spoke his direct words were  ¨ I can assure you, this flag will be returned to this brigade in a free Havana.¨
